- The side effects of willow bark use are generally mild; however, they may potentially cause stomach irritation, inflammation and upset, as well as skin rash, a sensation of ringing in the ears and kidney inflammation. People who are allergic to aspirin products should not use willow bark. The symptoms of an allergic reaction include breathing difficulties, dizziness, itching, swelling and rash.
- Willow bark may cause stomach bleeding if it is used with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen. It makes diuretics and beta blockers less effective, and increases the risk of bleeding if used in combination with blood-thinning medications.
- Do not give willow bark to children under the age of 19 if they have a viral infection. Researchers have found a link between a dangerous disease called Reye's syndrome and the use of aspirin or aspirin-type products in children who have the flu or chicken pox. Reye's syndrome causes brain and liver damage.
