- An empty shelf provides a spot for your recyclables that won't take up any floor space. If you don't already have shelf space in the kitchen, mount one to the wall in an open area. Use a basket or canvas cube container to hold the recycling items. Add a tag or label to the front of each container to identify the type of recyclable material that goes inside, which allows you to sort the items as you go. Look for a basket with an inner plastic liner in case some of the items are still damp when placed inside. Line up the baskets or bins on the shelf so they are out of the way.
- A lower cabinet with a sliding base camouflages the recycling center in the kitchen. A special sliding unit attaches to the door of the cupboard. The recycling bins go onto the sliding piece. When you pull on the cupboard door, the unit pulls out to reveal the recycling containers. A special corner recycling center is another option for hiding the bins in a cupboard. It mounts in a corner cupboard and spins to reveal different bins, much like a lazy Susan.
- Decorative bags offer another storage option for your recyclable materials. Choose drawstring bags that match the decor in your kitchen. The size you choose depends on how many recyclables you typically produce and want to store. Sew on a label, or use fabric paint to write the type of material for each bag. Add ribbons or similar materials for a decorative touch. Mount pegs or hooks along the wall to hold the bags. If the bags become damp or dirty from the recyclable materials, you can toss them in the washing machine to clean them.
- Most home stores sell freestanding drawer units with three or more drawers. Options often include plastic, wicker and metal with wire bins. Choose a drawer unit that complements the rest of your kitchen decor so it won't look out of place. Add labels to the front of each drawer to identify the type of item that goes inside. When you empty your recycling, you can pull the drawers out completely and dump the contents.
