- 1). Write out the inequality on paper, then simplify it so that "0" is the only value on the right side of the inequality. For instance, make x^2 + x + 5 > 7 into x^2 + x - 2 > 0.
- 2). Replace the inequality sign with an equal sign. The inequality should now be x^2 + x - 2 = 0.
- 3). Solve the equation using either factoring or the quadratic formula, whichever you're more comfortable with. You should get x = 1 and x = -2.
- 4). Draw a number line with a few numbers above and below the two answers, then circle the numbers corresponding to the numbers you got. Any number not in between the two numbers solves the equation -- that is, anything less than -2 or greater than 1.
