Notability – In November 2008, 36-year-old Ben Lujan was elected Congressman from New Mexico’s 3rd district, replacing Tom Udall, who was elected to the U.S. Senate.
For the previous four years, Lujan was an elected member of the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission, where he advocated strongly for state utlilities’ increased use of renewable energy sources, including solar energy.
Commissioner Lujan joined officials in California, Oregon and Washington, to sign onto the Joint Action Framework on Climate Change on behalf of the state of New Mexico to create regional solutions to global warming.
Commissioner Lujan was also well-known for the health insurance industry in order to expand access to insurance and to close loopholes the industry had been using to unfairly deny medical claims.
Lujan resides in the Nambé Pueblo, north of Santa Fe, one of the Eight Northern Pueblos, which are Native-American communities in New Mexico.
