- The mimosa is a very controversial tree that is treasured as an exotic ornamental by some landscapers and gardeners, but is considered to be an invasive pest by others.
- Silk trees are extremely attractive with their fern-like leaves and beautifully-fragrant pink flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer. The blossoms attract butterflies and hummingbirds.
- Mimosa is a tree with a short lifespan of only 10 to 20 years. During late summer and early autumn, it produces numerous seed pods, which are extremely toxic if ingested.
- The rapid growth of these trees allows them to offer beauty and some shade benefit within a relative short time. Mimosa reproduces so rapidly however, that it is overly competitive with native tree and shrub species, and can crowd them out.
- Due to the potential ecological impacts posed by mimosa trees, they should be kept away from wooded areas and neighboring properties. Mow adjacent areas regularly to keep seedlings under control.
