- 1). Open the Outback's glove box. Grab the side panel of the dashboard -- the vertical panel on the passenger's side of the dashboard -- from inside the glove box and pull the side panel from the dashboard. This exposes the glove box damper -- the string that holds the glove box in place.
- 2). Remove the screw holding the string damper to the side of the dashboard, using a Phillips screwdriver.
- 3). Push the passenger's side of the glove box inward to free the clip from the dashboard, and pull the passenger's side of the glove box from the dashboard, followed by the driver's side of the glove box.
- 4). Place the glove box in a secure location to prevent accidental damage.
- 5). Grab the upper storage compartment, the roughly 7-by-3 inch container at the top of the glove box compartment, and pull the storage compartment from the dashboard.
- 6). Remove the three screws holding the L-shaped bracket that was behind the upper storage compartment. Locate the three screws by looking underneath, where the upper storage container was.
- 7). Peel the insulator, the cloth-like cover, from the hook-and-loop (Velcro) tape under where the upper storage container was. Push the insulator upwards and out of the way, exposing the 6-by-2 inch plastic cover. This cover is the cabin air filter tray.
- 8). Press the four locking tabs on the cabin air filter cover and pull the tray from behind the dashboard. Notice that the filter remains in the tray.
- 9). Pull the cabin air filter from the tray and install a new one in the tray.
- 10
Slide the cabin air filter tray back into its slot behind the dashboard until the tabs click into place. - 11
Fold the insulator back into its proper position and fasten the hook-and-loop tape to lock it into place. - 12
Sit the L-shaped bracket back in place through the upper storage compartment hole and tighten the three screws with a Phillips screwdriver. - 13
Insert the tab on the driver's side of the glove box into the hole on the driver's side of the dashboard. Press the passenger's side of the glove box inward, line up the tab of the passenger's side of the glove box with the hole in the passenger's side of the dashboard and allow the tab to slide into the hole. - 14
Lift the glove box slightly and line the glove box damper up with its mount on the dashboard. Tighten the screw with a Phillips screwdriver. - 15
Reinstall the dashboard side cover and close the glove box.
