- 1). Unzip and remove cushion coverings if possible. Check the label inside the covers for specific laundering directions. If no directions can be found, wash the cushion covers on cold, and hang to dry. If you cannot launder the cushion covers, remove the cushions from the furniture to make cleaning easier.
- 2). Attach a vacuum brush to your vacuum cleaner's hose, and vacuum the surface of the couch and chairs. Be sure to get into any nooks and crannies. If you have a thin, angled vacuum attachment, use this to get into hard to reach corners. Vacuum all sides of the couch and chair cushions if you are not laundering them.
- 3). Apply a small amount of upholstery shampoo to a hidden area of each piece of furniture. Places that are covered by cushions are ideal. However, make sure that you are testing a patch of fabric that is the same material as the rest of the fabric on the piece to tell if the cleaner will stain or fade your furniture. If the cleaner does have an adverse effect on your upholstery, try a different solution until you find one that cleans your upholstery well.
- 4). Use an upholstery brush to apply the upholstery cleaner to the couch and chairs. Follow the directions on the cleaner's bottle for specific application instructions. For most cleaners, work the solutions in with an upholstery brush, then blot the upholstery dry with a soft microfiber towel.
- 5). Replace the covers on the cushions if you have laundered them. If the covers were not removable, wash the cushions with the upholstery cleaner as well. Allow all surfaces to dry before reassembling and using your furniture again.
