How to Change the Motorcycle Tire on a KLR 650

    Rear Tire

    • 1). Remove the cotter pin from the rear axle. Use pliers to straighten the pin's legs and pull the pin out of the axle. Loosen the rear axle nut using a breaker bar; do not remove the nut at this time. Loosen the pair of nuts on both chain adjusters with a wrench.

    • 2). Raise the rear of the motorcycle off the ground using a motorcycle stand. Push the rear wheel forward to loosen the chain. Pull the chain off of the rear sprocket.

    • 3). Remove the rear axle nut completely. Tap the axle out of the swing arm using a rubber mallet.

    • 4). Lower the wheel to the ground and pull out the spacers and washers from both sides of the wheel.

    Tire Wheel

    • 1). Loosen and remove the front brake caliper's mounting bolts with a breaker bar. Slide the caliper off of the front fork and the wheel's brake rotor. Suspend the caliper from the front fork or frame using a bungee cord. Loosen the front axle nut with a breaker bar, but do not remove it at this time.

    • 2). Lift the front wheel off of the ground with a motorcycle stand. Unscrew the front axle nut and tap the axle out of the front fork using a rubber mallet.

    • 3). Lower the wheel to the ground and remove any spacers or washers.

    Tire Replacement

    • 1). Lay the wheel, rotor up, on a pair of wooden blocks. Using a core tool, remove the valve stem core and allow the tube to deflate. Push the tire down and away from the edge of the wheel to create a gap.

    • 2). Insert a tire iron into the gap and press it down firmly to stretch a portion of the tire over the edge of the wheel. Hold the tire iron in place and insert a second tire iron between the tire and wheel. Press down again to stretch another portion of the tire over the wheel.

    • 3). Remove the second tire iron and place it further down the wheel and press down. Continue to work across the tire until the entire upper edge of the tire has been removed.

    • 4). Pull the inner tube out of the tire and pull the remaining edge of the tire to the upper edge of the wheel. Stand the wheel up on its side and slip a tire iron through the center of the wheel's rim and under the remaining edge of the tire.

    • 5). Hook the tip of the tire iron over the outer edge of the wheel. Hold the wheel between your knees and pull the tire iron upwards to pop the remaining edge of the tire off of the rim.

    • 6). Lay the wheel onto its side on your wooden blocks. Hook the lower edge of the new tire over the upper edge of the wheel. Press down firmly on the tire to force the lower edge onto the rim.

    • 7). Reinstall the valve stem core into the tube. Inflate the tube enough for the tube to hold its shape and slide it into the partially mounted tire. Align the valve stem with the hole in the wheel's rim and push it through. Press the tire downward to bring the remaining edge of the tire closer to the wheel's upper edge.

    • 8). Mount the remaining edge of the tire with a tire iron, hooking the tire iron's tip between the tire and the edge of the wheel and levering it onto the rim. Work around the wheel until the tire is completely seated. Inflate the tube to 40 pounds per square inch to set the tire's bead, indicated by two distinct pops. Deflate the tube completely. Re-inflate the tube to your desired tire pressure.

    • 9). Reinstall the wheel onto the motorcycle.
