How to Reset a Check Engine Light for a 2000 4-Runner

    • 1). Locate the diagnostic/data link connector (DLC) under the dashboard on the right side of the steering wheel in the 4-Runner. This plug has a 16-prong connection and is shaped like a small trapezoid.

    • 2). Plug the pocket scanner into the DLC. Turn the pocket scanner's power button on, if it is so equipped. Most pocket scanners employ power from the vehicle's battery.

    • 3). Place the keys in the ignition and turn the 4-Runner to the key-on/engine-off position. This position is two ignition clicks forward and will illuminate the lights on the instrument panel and empower all the electrical features of the SUV.

    • 4). Read the scanner's monitor menu and button options. While there are many pocket scanner brands and types (the higher-priced ones have more features), they are simple to use and self-explanatory.

    • 5). Use the scroll button to move the cursor on the menu to "erase code(s)" or "erase DTCs" (diagnostic trouble codes). On some models of scanners, an erase button may be featured. If this is the case, press the erase button.

    • 6). Follow the menu instructions on the scanner. Some may ask if you're sure if you want to erase the code. If so, scroll to "yes" and press "enter" or "erase" again.

    • 7). Wait for the menu to read "command sent" before disconnecting the scanner from the DLC.

    • 8). Start the engine of the 4-Runner and check on the instrument panel to ensure the check engine icon is no longer illuminated.
