- 1). Determine where, in the county you live or are getting married, you must apply for a marriage license. Every state is different: some require applicants to visit the County Probate Court and others the County Clerk of Court. If you are unsure how to find out which county office issues marriage licenses in your area, contact your local courthouse for direction.
- 2). Contact the relevant county office for your location to find out about the specific marriage license application process. Ask if you can pick up a marriage license application in advance. Most places will allow you to pick up an application to complete at home so the time spent at the court is minimized; however, all marriage licenses must be signed in the presence of a notary at the courthouse.
- 3). Visit your Clerk of Court or Probate Court website to see if there is a printable marriage license application for you to fill out. Not all counties offer this service, but many do.
