- 1). Pour playground sand into the bottom of a clean half gallon paper milk carton. You will need around 2 inches of sand. This will provide stability to the windmill.
- 2). Sharpen a pencil to a point. Press the point of the pencil through one side of the milk carton, halfway down the side of it. Continue to press the pencil through the other side of the carton, parallel to the first hole. Remove the pencil.
- 3). Use the tip of your pencil to make a hole in the end of a cork from a wine bottle. In the hole you make, insert the end of a straw. Use a standard plastic drinking straw. Insert the other end of the straw through the two parallel holes you made in step 2.
- 4). Use a straight pin to attach a pinwheel to the end of the drinking straw that does not have the cork attached. You can find pinwheels at your local toy store. If you prefer not to use the straight pin, you can use glue to attach it to the straw. If you choose to use glue, avoid craft glues. Use lighter glues.
- 5). Cut a length of string that is 36 inches long. Use a cotton string that is lightweight, instead of heavy twine. You can also use a piece of sewing thread if you prefer. Tie one end of the cotton string to the cork. Tie the loose end of the string to a paper clip.
- 6). Use your breath, by blowing, or a fan to make the pinwheel spin. As the pinwheel spins, the thread will wrap up on the cork as you blow the pinwheel. This will simulate the effectiveness of a full-scale windmill.
