- 1). Cut the 8-foot 2x12 board in half. Set the two 4-foot-long pieces aside.
- 2). Cut two boards that are 51 1/2 inches long from the 10-foot 2x12 board.
- 3). Stand the cut 2x12s on edge on a flat surface so they form a square with an inside measure of 4 feet by 4 feet. Screw two corner brackets at each corner to create an open-top and open-bottom 2x12 frame that is 4 feet square.
- 4). Lay the 4x4 frame on a level surface where you wish you garden to be. The frame can be laid on bare ground, grass or concrete.
- 5). Place a layer of gravel 2 inches deep into the bottom of your frame. Fill the frame with a combination of sand, loam and garden soil, well mixed. Fill to within 2 inches of the top of your 4x4 garden frame.
- 6). Hammer small nails part way into the top edge of the frame at one-foot intervals. Tie string to the nails so the strings lay out a grid pattern above your garden of 16 one-foot squares. Plant your vegetables or flowers inside the one-foot squares.
