Social networks have been around for a long time now actually since 1997 when SixDegrees.
com was launched.
Now, the largest social network in terms of profits and views is Facebook.
com.
Obviously the social network experience has changed quite a bit but what hasn't changed is the use of emoticons.
The most commonly used emoticon is the smiley :).
These emoticons have been around since the internet first began when they were used in emails and even in simple DOS programs.
Facebook has many built-in emoticons that will be turned into an image of the smiley face when input into a chat or comment, but some still do not change such as xD xP and 0.
0.
Still there is a simple work around that many people tend to overlook, and not only is this work around simple but it is also adds a lot to the humor involved in posting these emoticons.
I am of course talking about using a real image.
By using an image sorted database you get access to images from a broad base of emotions.
The images are usually ranked in order from highest rank to lowest rank.
To use these services is simple.
Instead of posting a smiley face you go to the site find an image of someone smiling, then post the URL of the page the image was found on.
This of course will get some laughs and will prove your point a lot easier than using a simple smiley face.
Obviously it does have its downsides as it takes a few extra seconds to get the image you want, but until Facebook changes their emoticons to add a little bit more emotion this is the best thing available.
