- 1). Purchase bypass shears from your local gardening supply store. Bypass shears are best to use for pruning, because they have a lower hook that cradles the stem of the plant to ensure it isn't harmed when cutting.
- 2). Design a plan for pruning. Determine if you want the astilbe to blend in with the rest of the landscape or stand out. Check the health of the surrounding plants. Any dying plants can be taken out and you can allow your astilbe plants to grow into their space.
- 3). Cut one-third of the plant. Astilbe produces its best flowers on new growth. Make sure that you cut any old or grayish stems.
- 4). Maintain the plant's height by pinching tips. Hold a measuring tape up to keep them in an uniform height.
- 5). Shear the side of the plants if you are creating a border. You may sacrifice blooming flowers, but you will get the shape you desire.
