How to Check Transmission Fluid in an '87 Toyota Pickup

    • 1). Drive the Toyota truck for at least 15 minutes to warm the engine. The transmission fluid level is most accurately determined when the engine (and therefore the fluid) is warm.

    • 2). Pull the hood release lever to open the hood of the Toyota truck. Move to the front of the truck, open the hood, and prop it open with the metal support arm inside the engine compartment.

    • 3). Remove the transmission fluid dipstick. The dipstick has a yellow handle and is located down in the right side of the engine compartment.

    • 4). Wipe the dipstick clean and return it to its slot.

    • 5). Pull the stick from the slot once more and assess the fluid level. The fluid line should be between the two notches nearest to the dipstick's handle. There are two other notches on the dipstick that are used for reading the level of transmission fluid when the engine is cold. The cold notches are closer to the end of the dipstick.

    • 6). If the fluid level is between the hot notches, the fluid level is acceptable. If the fluid level is below the two notches, add more fluid to the transmission fluid reservoir with a funnel.

    • 7). Return the dipstick to the slot and close the Toyota's hood.
