- When planning an excavation, you must contact Georgia 811 (or 800-282-7411) at least two business days prior to commencing work. You can place requests via phone, or once trained in the online system you can make requests via the state's web-based ticket system. Once a request is placed, the Utilities Protection Center has up to two days to mark the lines. It is against the law for any excavation to be performed until the lines are marked.
- No one, including facility owners or operators, may make a request to mark a site unless the excavation project is scheduled to begin. However, there is an exception to this rule for persons making design locate requests. Also, you may not make additional requests for re-marking unless it is for an extension on a time permit or there are extenuating circumstances.
- After you are granted a ticket to excavate and lines are marked, the project is given 21 calendar days until the ticket expires. If work is anticipated to go past the expiration time, or there have been circumstances which have delayed the project, you must place a request to renew the ticket two days before expiration occurs.
- When working in a state park or a historical site, you cannot excavate, dig, construct or remove any property unless special permission has been granted by the commissioner of natural resources. By law the state of Georgia, through the Department of Natural Resources, reserves all rights to perform surveying and/or excavating of state owned lands such as prehistoric and historical sites, ruins or any lands with interest of artifacts and/or treasures. However, permits can be granted to certain scientific organizations and/or qualified individuals for archaeological purposes.
