- 1). Empty one of the used cartridges from the automatic litter box but do not throw out the cartridge itself. These cartridges have a large compartment with litter and a smaller, enclosed compartment with all the raked-out waste. Empty both compartments thoroughly.
- 2). Refill the compartment that had the litter in it with scoop litter. Scoop litter can be purchased inexpensively online or at any store that sells pet supplies. Do not refill the compartment with more litter than it originally had.
- 3). Replace the cartridge onto the automatic litter box and repeat this process once a week, as if you were replacing the cartridge with a brand-new cartridge. Though this takes away some of the selling points of automatic litter boxes, it does save you a lot of money and creates less trash.
