- 1). Slide a flat object, such as a putty knife, between the glass and the surface to which it is attached by the adhesive tape. Whenever the tip of the flat object meets resistance, angle the object upward to about 10 degrees to pry the glass away from the surface. Move the object down 1 to 2 inches and pry upward again, loosening the glass all around the perimeter until it finally comes free.
- 2). Apply water-displacement spray, hairspray or peanut butter to the glass surface to break down the adhesive tape. Allow it to sit on the surface for four to five minutes.
- 3). Wipe the substance off of the glass using a paper towel or dry cloth. If all of the adhesive doesn't come off, reapply the substance to the surface, wait a few minutes and wipe the glass again.
- 4). Scrape the tape or adhesive residue off of the glass with a razor blade only if it won't come off by the recommended substances alone. When scraping the adhesive from the surface, hold the razor blade at a 15- to 20-degree angle to the glass and slide it over the glass 1 to 2cm at a time to keep from scratching the surface.
- 5). Clean the glass with glass cleaner and a rag to remove any oil or residue that remains after the adhesive has been lifted off of the surface. Wipe the glass in long, even strokes to prevent streaking.
- 6). Remove the adhesive tape from the other surface following the same approach if the surface is similar to glass, such as a laminated countertop. Otherwise, use a cleaner that is recommended for the type of surface to which the glass was attached, such as wood cleaner or wood oil for wood surfaces.
