With our children getting fatter our schools should be considering the benefits of cycling to school for youngsters. There are grants available for shelters to house bicycles and the size of these should depend on a survey of pupils.
This morning in a news story on the radio, it was said that when there was a fuel shortage in Cuba, the government of the island issued bicycles to the population. Not surprisingly the result was that the peoplebecame healthier because of the exercise. It does not need an academic to work this out!
With the United Kingdom being the fat man of Europe it has been a good idea for the Government to promote health in our youngsters. There are grants available for every schoolin the country to provide cycle shelters to encourage youngsters to get some exercise.
Exercise is not the only benefit derived from cycle schemes. There are now so many families that take their children to school by car that congestion is a real problem in many areas at peak times.
There are some criteria that need to be met. The school has to provide a travel plan and they need to disclose the amount of pupils and teachers. Any other information about this scheme can be found on the internet.
If a school or other institution would like to erect a shelter such as this, it pays to do some research. The first consideration is the size of the shelter and the budget available. There are constructions available in galvanised steel or aluminium.
Will your school need a secure shelter as it is in a vulnerable area? If your cycles are stored securely within the school ground with no access to the public, perhaps it can get away with a basic model where bikes can be secured with a chain, but not necessarily locked away.
The simplest shelter has a price tag of around 1,600 pound. All constructions can be supplied in a range of colours to blend in with your colour scheme and surroundings. Our company will carry out a free site survey to ascertain your requirements.
In most cases there will be room within the school grounds to house a shelter, but if space is short then a lesser used area such as a rough bit of grass or flowerbed may be used to position a structure with a canopy. It needs to be understood that any such shelter should be placed on tarmac if it is available or a concrete base has to be laid down.
If your school is in a secure area, the building will be less costly than if a secure storage space is required. Have you done a survey of how many youngsters cycle to school? If the number is large then you may be better off having a compound built which holds up to 120 bicycles.
It should be noted that any shed or structure can be customised so that it will fit into the space available.
Although our company is situated in the North West of England, we have customers all over the United Kingdom. Distance is not a hindrance; save perhaps for the bad weather recently experienced where copious snow was a problem.
