- 1). Locate the power switch on your lava lamp. The switch will often be located somewhere along the cord in the form of a dial, or on the base of the lamp in the form of a switch.
- 2). Set the lamp's power switch to the "Off" position, taking care not to jostle the lamp in the process.
- 3). Allow the lava lamp gel time to cool down and contract. Once the gel has contracted enough from lack of heat, it will become gradually denser than the liquid surrounding it and settle into a solid wax-like state at the bottom of the lamp.
- 4). Turn the lava lamp on again after moving or storing it by plugging it in and switching the power button to the "On" state to reverse the change you have made to the state of the lava lamp gel.
