- 1). Stand in a shower or over a tub and pour a 20 percent peroxide solution over your hair. Because gray hair is coarser than normal hair, the peroxide solution will help open the cuticle for easy color absorption. Leave the solution on your hair for 10 minutes and rinse. Dry your hair thoroughly with a hairdryer. Do not apply hair dye to wet hair.
- 2). Open the blonde dye kit and read through the instructions. Most dye kits will have specific instructions for gray hair which includes dying the roots at the end of the process versus the beginning. Mix together the solution according to the directions.
- 3). Put on old clothing and rubber gloves. This will protect your clothing and hands when applying the dye.
- 4). Comb through your hair and part into two separate sections - right side and left side. Leave the right side down to begin the dyeing application. Squeeze the hair dye solution into a bowl for easy application. Dip the application brush into the dye solution and apply directly to your strands. Work the solution from 1 inch above your root line to the tips of your hair. You will do the roots last. Move throughout the right side of your head until all of your strands are coated with the blond hair dye.
- 5). Release the left side of your hair and repeat the process. As you apply the dye, move the dyed hair to one side so you can see what dry hair you have remaining. Wrap your head in a shower cap or plastic cling wrap for 10 minutes. Set the hair dye solution to the side for the roots.
- 6). Remove the cap or plastic cling wrap. Apply the hair dye solution to your hair line and roots. Massage the solution into your roots and scalp with your gloved fingers. Reapply the shower cap or wrap your hair again with plastic wrap. Set the timer for the remaining 15 minutes.
- 7). Remove the cap or plastic wrap and rinse hair thoroughly. The blond will be visible and the brown ash shade should be gone. Condition your hair with the included conditioning products, rinse and style as normal.
- 8). Apply a blond toner four weeks after you dye the hair blond. The toner will help ward off any ash trying to poke through and keep brassiness at bay.
