Teenagers require their own personal space, even when sharing a bedroom. Designing that personal space can be creative and beneficial for the teens living in it. The room can be visually divided but still flow together when using the blackboard wall and cork wall design technique. The blackboard wall is special paint that is applied directly to the wall and then can be used as a blackboard. The cork wall is strips of cork glued onto the wall. Creating a visual border using area rugs on the floor is another way to define space in a shared bedroom. - A blackboard-painted wallchinese text image by Gina Smith from Fotolia.com
The blackboard wall is easy to paint and cost effective. Begin by installing a chair rail that goes around the room about half of the way up from the floor. Paint the wall under the chair rail an agreed upon color, which will help to visually pull the room together. Above the chair rail, paint the room in blackboard paint, which truly is black. Once the paint dries, each teenager can use chalk to draw pictures and write notes and funny sayings to define her side of the room. The chalk comes in many colors and can be easily wiped away. - Cork wallwhite note pinned to cork board image by Dmitry Rukhlenko from Fotolia.com
A cork wall is another fun way for the teen to individualize her side of the wall. The chair rail idea can be implemented on the bottom half of the wall to tie in the lower half of the room; then install the cork above it. Cork comes in many colors and can be installed in sheets or tiles. Teens will have fun sticking pictures and drawings into the cork wall. - Area rugsInterior of the hotel room image by PaulPaladin from Fotolia.com
Defining individual space on the floor will help to make each side of the teenagers' room special. Area rugs placed under the bed can help to achieve this look. The area rugs can be the same color and pattern or they can complement each other. The area rugs can also be tied in visually with the paint color on the lower half of the wall, and then add black accents if you are using the blackboard paint above it.
