- 1). Choose a space that has plenty of electrical outlets and room to put power machinery, as well as space to work and store finished projects. If your space isn't insulated, consider adding insulation as well as a space heater and fans to allow you to work comfortably in all seasons.
- 2). Decide what size wood lathe you want to bring into your shop (see Resources). The lathe will be your most important tool. Lathes come in a wide variety of sizes, including table-mounted models. The lathe you choose will depend upon the money you have to spend, how much space you have in your shop and the typical size of the projects you work on.
- 3). Make use of wall space. Hang cork boards so you can pin building plans, reference photos and blueprints. Use peg boards to hang smaller, frequently used tools for easy access.
- 4). Buy or build a toolbox. One or more toolboxes, depending upon the number of tools you have, will help you organize your tools and keep your work space free of clutter.
- 5). Build a workbench (or purchase one) that takes up as much space along one wall as you can afford.
- 6). Consider building or purchasing shelves for storing odds and ends, and pieces of wood, ensuring that you will always have plenty of wood on hand when you need it.
- 7). Use a metal cabinet to store paint, varnish and other flammable materials. Keep these materials stored separately but still within easy access.
