- 1). Purchase an unlocked iPhone from a service such as eBay or Craigslist. You can only purchase iPhones direct from AT&T--and with mandatory service contracts--as of September 2010, so you will need to purchase your iPhone second-hand if you don't already have one. Include the word "unlocked" in your search terms.
- 2). Unlock the iPhone yourself. A number of websites sell software that can unlock your iPhone, but by using "blackra1n," (see Resources), you can do this for free. Simply download the file onto your hard drive, run it and connect your iPhone to your computer to transfer the program onto it. Run the program within your iPhone to unlock it for use with all carriers.
- 3). Pay a computer or mobile phone repair specialist to unlock your iPhone for you if you're not comfortable installing software on your own. The specialist will complete the entire process for you.
- 4). Insert your prepaid SIM card into the top of your iPhone and begin using it to make calls--and, if your prepaid service provides a data plan--using "Apps" and the Internet.
