- 1). Draw a mock-up of your desired Earth model on a piece of graphing paper. Use your Styrofoam ball to create a drawing of equal size; you'll need to make several sketches to cover all of the angles. Use the squares to help you determine where certain topographical features will go on your scale model.
- 2). Cover the Styrofoam ball with a layer of blue plasticine modeling clay to represent the large percentage of oceans on the Earth's surface.
- 3). Consult your graphing paper mock-up to determine where the dry land features should go. Use green plasticine modeling clay to create your continents, and use brown clay to indicate any other features like mountain ranges on top of the land masses. Use white plasticine in ice-covered areas like the Arctic.
- 4). Carve out channels and bodies of water with a toothpick to reveal the blue plasticine underneath your land masses.
- 5). Insert a wooden dowel into the bottom of the Styrofoam ball. Hot glue the free end of the dowel to a Styrofoam base.
