- 1). Set one variable of your equation as zero and calculate the other variable using that value. For example, if you have the equation 2x + y = 4 and set x to equal 0, y will equal 4.
- 2). Draw the point on your graph. X relates to the horizontal axis and y to the vertical axis. Negative values for x are left of the origin -- (0, 0) -- and negative values for y are below the origin. Using the example with (x, y) as (0, 4), draw your point on the y-axis four spaces up.
- 3). Go back to your original equation. Set y equal to zero and solve for x. In the example 2x + y = 4, the equation simplifies to 2x = 4, so x = 2.
- 4). Draw your point along the x-axis at (2, 0).
- 5). Align the ruler with the two points and draw a line through (0, 4) and (2, 0).
