- Select a relatively flat area to begin with to avoid excessive grading. While you can grade any area flat for a pool, it can take extensive work. The pool area must remain completely flat or the pool can collapse during use, causing possible damage to the pool. The excessive amount of water released from a collapsed pool is also a mess to clean up and may cause damage to your lawn.
- Mark the area of the pool with chalk to prepare for grading. Drive a wooden stake into the middle of this area. Extend a board from the wooden stake to the outside perimeter of the pool. Place a level on top of the board.
- Identify the higher areas of the marked area for grading. Dislodge the grass and dirt from the higher areas with a shovel. Avoid filling in the low areas, but focus on making the higher areas equal to the low areas. Move the board with the level on top of it around the marked area to continue identifying the uneven areas.
- Consider carefully where to situate your above ground pool. Avoid areas on top of tree roots or other major obstructions. Steer clear of areas on or near a septic system or utilities. Do not place the pool underneath trees or overhead wires.
