Sometimes, learning who your real friends are can be a harsh lesson, one that you probably wish you did not have to deal with. It usually happens in times of trouble, when you really need that friend to lean on and get support from. The ones who are there are your real friends and the ones who seem to be missing in action are the ones that will disappoint you, but now you know where you really stand with them.
Part of the disappointment that comes from learning who your real friends are is the fact that you evaluated or judged them wrong. I can remember a really hard time in my life several years back when a few of the guys I would unquestionably call a friend seemed to just disappear when I needed them and as much as it hurt that they did this, it also stung to realize that I had misjudged them pretty badly.
People will come and go in this life, but the ones who stick around are the ones that you really need to appreciate. They are the ones who embody what it means to be buddies and what it means to have true friendship.
