If you know someone who works in government--whether it is local, state or federal--then you may want to give a gift that shows how much you revere and respect public service employees. Use caution when giving a gift to a government employee. The Federal Bribery Statute generally prohibits gift-giving to a public official with the "intent to influence." If you're not careful about the reasons for your gift, it could be interpreted as a bribe. - If you would like to give a postal worker a present, then you must follow strict guidelines set by the government. You may give U.S. mail carriers a gift that you purchased for less than $20.00, as they cannot accept cash. Include a greeting card that lets your postal carrier know that you appreciate the service throughout the year in all weather conditions that make it difficult to deliver mail.
- If you have a friend who works in the federal government, create a gift that shows your appreciation for their hard work. Assemble a mixed drink kit with recipes for patriotic drinks, using red, white and blue-hued flavors. Another idea is to bake several batches of cookies based on recipes that were loved by different U.S. presidents.
- Give a model or ornament of the building where the government employee works. You may be able to buy replicas from online vendors. For example, the White House Historical Society sells Christmas ornaments every year that feature the White House. For local buildings, consider working with a woodworker or artisan. The Birdhouse Replica website makes birdhouses based on pictures that you provide.
- Take a photo of an employee in action at the office or of the building where he works. Another option is to hire a photographer to document a day in the life of your government worker. Have the photographs framed and matted. They can be hung in the house or office as a memento of your thoughtfulness.
