- 1). Cast on 15 stitches onto one of the your size 8 knitting needles to begin your child's scarf. While holding the end of the worsted yarn ball, twist a loop.
- 2). Pull another loop with your index finger and thumb through this twisted loop to create a slip knot. Place it onto a knitting needle to cast on the first stitch. Cast on 14 more loops in this fashion, placing the new stitches on top of the old ones. The first casted on loops create the width of the scarf. Depending on the child's age, you can add more or less of these beginning stitches.
- 3). Hold the needle with all the stitches with your left hand, if you are righthanded. Insert the other needle into the first loop at the top of the needle, which is the pointy part. It should create a cross, with the right needle underneath the left needle.
- 4). Wrap the right needle with yarn attached to the yarn ball and the rest of the project. Then, carefully move the first loop from the left needle onto the right needle. This is the first knit.
- 5). Insert the right needle into the next loop of the left needle. Wrap the right needle with the yarn. Then, transfer the loop from the left needle onto the right needle. Continue knitting until all the loops are transferred to the right needle. Then, switch the needle with all the loops to the left hand. Repeat this knitting.
- 6). Cast off the scarf once you have a scarf about 20 inches long. Knit two stitches and then slip the next loop onto the right needle. Knit two more stitches and then slip the next loop onto the right needle. Continue until you have one stitch left.
- 7). Cut the yarn off the yarn ball with scissors so you have about 6 inches of tail. Pull the last loop of the needle and thread the yarn through it. Pull tight to finish the child's scarf.
