The term "household items" can entail a variety of objects. It is a term used to specify items frequently found in the home but can include everything from a cleaning mop to a shovel and even glue or tape. To define whether or not an item is considered a household item, use categories and sections that define the areas of a home.

Cleaning

Cleaning supplies of various kinds are considered household items, according to Healthy Cleaning 101. Cleaning products can include abrasive cleaners, nonabrasive cleaners, bleaches, disinfectants, drain cleaners and openers, glass cleaners, glass and multisurface cleaners, hard water mineral removers and oven cleaners. Essentially, the definition covers everything from the cleaners you use frequently like dishwashing soap and all-purpose cleaners to products you use once every six months to a year, like floor care products and upholstery cleaners.

Personal products that help you stay cleaned and groomed are also considered household products. Examples of personal grooming products include makeup, shampoo and conditioner, bath products, eye and ear care and fragrances like perfume and aftershave. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, the list also includes deodorant, brushes and combs for hair care, hair color, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shaving cream, soap and body lotions.

Landscaping tools and supplies are also considered household items, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. Household items for the garden can include animal repellent, barbecue grill, compost bin or simply compost, fence, fence post, grout, fertilizer, herbicide, insect repellent, lawn care, lawn mower, lubricant, patio furniture and pesticide.

Household items that are used for maintenance often include tools or products that repair cracks or remove stains. Examples of household items used for maintenance include adhesives, caulk, cement, chimney duster, crack filler, door lock, drywall boards, electrical tools, glass, grease and insulation, according to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.

Children might often have to be creative when it comes to their school projects, so arts and craft supplies and tools are often considered household items. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, examples include candle-making accessories, dye, fabric, foam, foil, glitter, jewelry, leather, lubricant, metal, needlework and embroidery kits, paint, plastic, rubber, stain and scraps of wood.
