Four wheeling typically refers to taking a sport utility vehicle off the main roadways for sporting purposes or to enjoy nature. Trails have been set up throughout the country specifically for four wheeling. The sport is especially popular in Colorado, both in the winter and summer, as the area boasts a natural setting with snow-covered mountains. - Boreas Pass is located between Denver and Leadville. Originally a high railroad pass, the 11,481 foot nature trail now is available for a variety of activities including nature walks, mountain biking and four wheeling. Boreas Pass is prime location for viewing the changing seasons. You will find the trail located off Boreas Pass Road, which is directly off Colorado Route 9 South.
- Engineer Pass is part of the Alpine Loop located in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. The site is known for its numerous waterfalls. Use caution in the snow as some areas have narrow straights which may be difficult when passing other vehicles. Engineer Pass is located about three miles from the town of Ouray. A parking area for the trail is marked along Highway 550.
- St. Mary's Glacier, approximately 30 miles west of Denver, has the St. Mary's and Empire trails. St. Mary's is both larger and more popular. The trail also circles around the glacier. Empire is a smaller trail but has views of old mines and old cabins. The trails are located off the Fall River Road exit on I-70.
