Trim the Wichita juniper to preserve its conical shape. Sometimes your shrub will develop stray branches that stick out and distract from the overall shape. Use pruning shears to cut these branches back to the edge of the plant's general outline. Do not cut the branch at the trunk, because it will not grow back and could create a space bare of foliage. - 2). Trim dead branches back to the trunk with pruning shears. Do not cut the branch flush with trunk, but leave about a half-inch stub protruding from the trunk. This eliminates the possibility of stripping bark from the tree and makes the smallest possible scar on the tree.
- 3). Trim live branches back to the trunk to create a topiary look. Cut away all of the branches from the bottom of the tree to create an open space beneath the tree and expose the trunk. Consider each cut before you make it because Wichita juniper branches will not grow back after they have been cut.
