Nest + Eggs Card - Supplies Needed
Learn how to create a bird's nest by using the technique of heat embossing and make a card that is suitable for any mom for any occasion.  I used a stamp set to create the nest in the example but this can easily be duplicated with the use of a VersaMarker pen. The flexibility of this card design allows you to personalize it with different amounts of eggs too, making it suitable for occasions such as a new baby, Mother's Day, or as a simple thinking of you card.
Supplies Needed:
- 8.5" x 11"Â cardstock for the card base
- cream colored cardstock
- vellum
- patterned paper
- ink pad
- clear embossing powder
- stamp set (optional)
- VersaMarker pen (optional)
- scrap pieces of cardstock for the eggs
- concave corner mini punch
- embroidery floss
- mini glue dots
- foam adhesive
- 1/16" circle hand punch tool (optional)
Create the Card Base
Instructions:
1. Create the card base by cutting a piece of 8.5" x 11" paper into a 5.5" x 11" rectangle.  The finished size of this card is 5.5" square, so use a scoring board and bone folder to make a mark at 5.5".  Fold the cardstock in half.
2. Cut the cream colored cardstock into a 4.5" square.
3. Cut the vellum into a 4.25" square.Â
4. Use a concave corner mini punch on all four corners of the cream cardstock and vellum.
5. Layer the vellum on top of the cream cardstock and center it so that there is an even margin around all four sides. Â Use a couple of mini glue dots to secure the vellum to the cream cardstock by placing them toward the center where they will be hidden with the nest later on.

6. Use a 1/16" circle hand punch tool or a thumbtack to create holes in the four corners of the card cover (see photo above). Â This is where we will stitch with embroidery floss so you can make the holes closer or farther apart from each corner depending on how long of a stitch you wish to create.
Create the Card Base
7. Thread embroidery floss onto a needle and cut off about a 15" length.
8. Start by coming up through one of the holes from the backside of the card cover and then back down on the front to create one stitch. Â You can secure the end of the thread to the back of the card cover with a piece of tape or you can also tie it with the end of the thread after all four stitches have been created.
9. Repeat step 8 by continuing onto the next set of holes in a different corner until you've created all four stitches.
Cut off some of the excess thread on the backside and then secure with tape, or tie it with the beginning piece of thread.Â
Stamp and Heat Emboss the Nest onto Patterned Paper
10. Stamp the circle scribble image onto a piece of patterned paper, then sprinkle clear embossing powder on the stamped image, and then set it with a heat embossing tool. Â I used two of the scribble images from the set to create the nest in the photo above.
You can also create the circle scribble image with the use of a VersaMarker pen.  Simply hand draw a scribble in a circular motion then continue with the embossing powder and heat setting.
In this case you will want to use a colored embossing powder to create the embossed effect (Versamark ink is clear).
11. Once the nest has been heat embossed, use a sharp pair of scissors to cut it out of the patterned paper.
12. Trace a small oval shape onto the cardstock that you wish to create the eggs with.  I used an egg shaped stamp and cut it out of cardstock to use as a template.  Try doing a Google search for "egg shape" images which you can then print, cut out, and trace around. The eggs in the example are a little bit smaller than 1".
13. Use sharp scissors and cut the eggs out of the cardstock.
14. Use mini glue dots to adhere the eggs to the nest.
15. Use foam adhesive to adhere the nest to the card base.
This card size (5.5" square) is pretty large and will require a larger envelope. Â Please note that square shaped envelopes require a little extra postage so check with your post office before mailing. Â
Using a dark colored card base means that the space inside the card may be difficult to write on. Â Glue a piece of light colored paper to the inside of the card or use a white gel pen to write a message.
Supplies Used:
- "chocolate"Â cardstock for the card base (Paper Source)
- "vintage cream"Â cardstock (Papertrey Ink) (it looks pink in the example online but I assure you it's cream!)
- vellum (Papertrey Ink)
- patterned paper from the "basic white paper pad" (Basic Grey)
- "pearlescent crimson" Brilliance ink pad (Tsukineko)
- clear embossing powder
- "circle scribbles" stamp set (Papertrey Ink)
- scrap pieces of shimmery blue cardstock for the eggs (unknown)
- concave corner mini punch (EK Success)
- #598 embroidery floss (DMC)
- mini glue dots
- foam adhesive
