If you want to observe and identify the effects of light better, try angle lighting with a dark matte background. A black velvet background is ideal. You can also wear a visor or a baseball cap to avoid receiving direct or indirect light in your eyes. This way you can you can concentrate on your subject and its immediate surroundings.
Then redo the exact same setup with a pastel background (tonal value of +/-5), and you will be able to better observe more subtle effects you have already become aware of.
