Secures by design is a UK police initiative and it focuses on preventing crimes and increasing Home Protection The advice that they provide can reduce burglary by 75% they have compiled a security checklist to see how safe your home is and here are a few points from that list.
Doors, Windows and Locks.
1. When you replace a door buy a new door set , assembled frame and door, certified to pas 24 ‘doors of enhanced security'
2.Install windows that are certified to pas 24 ‘windows of enhanced security'
3.Locks should be upgraded to 5 lever locks certified to BS3621
4.When installing Patio doors ask for the sliding section to be on the inside and for anti lift blocks
5.existing patio doors can be fitted with extra security bolts to prevent forcing or lifting
Side and Back of property
6. Increase your Home protection by adding locked gates and fences that are a minimum of 2 meters. trellis can also prevent climbing.
7.Install Security Lighting to highlight intruders activity
8.Fit Padlocks to sheds and outbuildings and don't leave ladders and tools outside
9.make sure all doors and windows are securely locked before leaving the house…..It's a home protection basic but a surprisingly high amount of burglars gain interest this way.
10.Never Leave a hider key near the front door or one dangling on string through the letterbox….burglars know these tricks!!
Are you home?
11.Use automatic timer switches to make the house look occupied, an empty house may appear an obvious target.
12.If you are away for a few days suspend milk and paper deliveries so they are not seen piling up drawing attention to your absence
13.Ask a close friend of neighbor to go in and open and close curtains periodically and maybe even leave their car on the drive so it appears the house is occupied.
The Best and most effective method of Home Protection is to install a security system. Modern systems are a lot more desirable than the old type that they drilled into the walls for hours to install. Monitored home alarm systems are the latest in smart home protection as should the alarm activate in your absence a central control center is notified and can immediately dispatch relevant help and inform you over the phone…..If you choose a system with CCTV it can send an image of any intruder to your smart phone instantly via an App and Systems are also equipped with 2 way audio in case of a false alarm .
