- 1). Lift and properly support the hood on the 6000. Apply the car's emergency brake, then loosen the lug nuts on the driver's side tire slightly with a lug wrench.
- 2). Raise the car with a car jack and place a jack stand into position on the frame rail just right of the car jack. Lift the support arm on the jack stand until it fully supports the weight of the car, then lock the support arm in place. Do not remove the car jack; you can leave it in place for back up support.
- 3). Remove the lug nuts from the tire completely, then grasp the tire using both hand and slide it off the hub carefully. Try not to let the tire drag across the wheel studs because their threads can become damaged easily.
- 4). Locate the speed sensor on the opposite side of the brake caliper at the rear of the hub assembly. Follow the wire connected to the speed sensor up through the hole in the wheel well, then unplug its wiring harness plug. Pull the wire down through the hole and disconnect it from the rubber grommet on the strut tower.
- 5). Remove the bolt holding the speed sensor in place, then remove it along with its wire from your car. (You do not have to remove the two bolts from the bracket that the sensor mounts into.)
- 6). Apply a thin coating of anti-corrosion compound to the body of the new speed sensor, then remount it just as you removed the old sensor.
- 7). Tighten the speed sensor's mounting bolt to 106 inch-lbs., using a 1/4-inch drive torque wrench.
- 8). Reroute the speed sensor's wire just as you removed it, then plug the harness plug back together. It is important that you don't misroute the wire and allow it to get caught up in any moving parts, so pay close attention to what you're doing. The wire should have a bit of slack in it--not pulled super tight.
- 9). Remount the tire and return its lug nuts by hand. Tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern until snug using your lug wrench.

Remove the jack stand, then lower the car until the tire slightly makes contact with the ground. Set the 3/8-inch drive torque wrench to 100 ft-lbs. and continue the star tightening pattern to secure each of the lug nuts. Lower the car completely and remove the car jack. - 11
Repeat this process to replace the passenger-side speed sensor on the 1986 Pontiac 6000 if needed.
