- 1). Evaluate your needs. Sort through the stuff you have. Ask yourself questions about each item in your home; if you don't need it, use it or have it for a good reason, see if you can part with it. Donate duplicate items or items no longer in use to charity. Throw away broken, dirty or irreparable items.
- 2). Examine your furniture. If any items can do double duty as storage, put them to work. A hollow ottoman in the living room is ideal for storing a small craft project in progress. Any space under the bed can hold a bin of linens.
- 3). Create vertical storage space. Place shelves in open areas above windows and doors, or at convenient locations on your walls.
- 4). Fill nooks and crannies. Add extra bars and shelves to closets. Place a trunk or storage bin behind a staircase. Store larger items under coffee tables and disguise the storage with a pretty and functional tablecloth.
- 5). Create your own storage spaces. Invest in folding screens to hide stored items from prying eyes. Hang curtains to cordon off part of a room for storage purposes.
- 6). Store essential items in the areas where you'll need them. For example, placing extra toilet paper in the kitchen is confusing and inconvenient. Group similar items together and store them for easy use. By sorting and organizing your stash, you can free up space in other areas of your apartment.
