The scooter market contains a vast supply of scooters available to purchase. However, although scooters have the ability to contain large engines and go fast, some states require a certain sized scooter to operate on the highway. In Maine, scooters have its own vehicle category. The rules for operating a scooter in Maine do not apply to other two-wheeled vehicles such as motorcycles. These particular rules place a strict guideline for scooters.

Scooter Specification

In Maine, a scooter engine cannot exceed a 50cc engine size. Although scooter engines now have capacities much larger, in order to remain legal on Maine's road system, the scooter must remain within these guidelines. A 50cc scooter engine typically does not exceed a 45 mph rate. This rate varies depending on the size of the operator and the condition of the roads. A steep incline, or heavy-set person will make the top speed decrease. Alternatively, if the scooter contains an electric engine, as opposed to gasoline, the scooter cannot exceed 1,500 watts to remain legal. Additionally, the scooter's wheels must not exceed 10 inches in diameter. The scooter must also contain at least two wheels, and no more than three wheels in order to have the classification of a scooter.

In order to legally operate a scooter in Maine, the scooter must receive registration from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Without this registration, the scooter cannot operate on public highways. The scooter does not have to pass an inspection in order to receive proper registration. However, the rider must have proof of registration in order to lawfully operate the scooter. Due to the lack of need for inspection, scooter owners must show honesty when registering the scooter. Inaccurate registration information will result in a loss of scooter registration, making it illegal to drive the scooter in Maine. The owner of the scooter does not have to attain a separate driver's license to operate a scooter in Maine. However, the rider does have to posses a Maine operator's license. It does not matter what type of operating license the owner possesses.

For the scooter to have legal authority on Maine's public highways, the scooter must meet each of the above requirements. A failure to meet these requirements will make the scooter illegal from cruising on Maine's roads. Driving a scooter without meeting the above specifications places the driver in danger of legal punishment by the authorities.
