- 1). Cut a piece of 2-inch thick wood in the shape fits the interior diameter of the faux wood column. Using a jig saw for this is the easiest approach. Cut the piece in half, again using the jig saw. Finally, cut notches in each half that represent the size of the existing structural column that the faux column will wrap around. Repeat this step for the blocking at the top of the column. You should have 4 pieces cut and notched.
- 2). Apply a thin layer of construction adhesive to the bottom of each half of the blocking pieces. Firmly press the halves into the concrete or wood floor as well as the ceiling structure. If applying on a wood deck, use a hammer and nails to attach the pieces as well. Let the adhesive dry completely.
- 3). Lay the faux column halves against the wood blocking installed previously. The faux columns usually come in two pieces to allow easy installation. Using a hammer and nails, attach the column pieces to the wood blocking. You should use small finish nails for this so it is easier to hide the nail heads. Put a nail every 2 to 3 inches around the column to ensure adequate stability.
- 4). Set the nail heads below the surface of the wood with a nail set. Apply a small bead of wood putty to cover the nail holes, allow to dry, and sand smooth. Also, if the seam between the two column halves has a visible gap, use caulking to conceal this area and allow for proper painting. If you plan to use a natural finish wood stain, use wood putty in this area rather than caulking to avoid a distinct line in the finished column.
- 5). Prime and paint the column, or if you prefer, you can use wood stain to finish the look of your new columns.
