- 1). Apply hot extra virgin olive oil to the hair. It strips over the counter hair color. This works best if the color came out too dark. Slather the olive oil all over your hair and let it sit for 10 minutes. Wash it out with warm water.
- 2). Wash and condition your hair with products designed to fix brassy hair. A common problem with over-the-counter color is brassy, yellow-toned hair. This is most common when dying or bleaching hair. The shampoo and conditioner will have a violet tint that counteracts the yellow color. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
- 3). Use a commercial color removal product on the hair. As they vary, follow the instructions on the package. These are harsh treatments that can be damaging to the hair, so they should be used as a last resort.
- 4). Visit a professional. Color correction is a complex and costly process when done at a salon. But, it may be the only way to correct the color.
