- Obtain a test kit from your county agriculture extension office. Read all directions thoroughly before collecting a sample.
- Select five to six places in the garden or lawn for sample collection. Remove plant material from the surface and collect a core of soil, 6 inches deep, from each area. Follow submission guidelines on the test kit and mail the sample to the laboratory immediately.
- If the analysis results indicate your soil is high in sodium, remove salts in the soil before planting again. Leach sodium from the soil by drenching with water and by improving soil drainage through incorporation of organic matter or installation of tile drains.
