How to Build a Set of Book Shelves

    • 1). Decide on the overall size of the shelving unit that will hold the set of book shelves. Measure the height, width and depth of the proposed unit and write them down.

    • 2). Draw the required pieces for the book shelves using the above measurements on the ½-inch thick plywood. Draw two sides for the unit, which will measure the height and the width of the unit. Since the book shelves are a set, draw one shelf measuring the width and the depth of the unit. The top and bottom of the shelves will be the same measurements, so draw two extra pieces.

    • 3). Cut each of the pieces out with a saw. Sandpaper the edges and surfaces smooth to avoid cracks and splinters.

    • 4). Lay one of the side pieces down on its side. Line up the top piece on its side, but perpendicular to the side piece. Create an upside down L-shape. Screw two screws into the side piece, so it connects with the top piece.

    • 5). Line up the bottom piece in the same manner, but at the opposite end of the side piece. Attach the piece by screwing two screws into the side piece in the same manner, so it connects with the bottom piece. The overall shape now looks like a mechanical U-shape.

    • 6). Decide where the shelf will be located between the top and bottom pieces already attached. Attach the shelf in the same manner as the previous pieces, using two screws. The overall structure should now look like a mechanical W-shape. Use the level to ensure each piece is even.

    • 7). Line up the other side piece, so it overlaps the ends of the top piece, the bottom piece and the shelf. Use the screwdriver and screws to attach the side piece to each of the three ends.

    • 8). Measure the overall height and width of the finished set of book shelves. Use the measurements to create a backside to the book shelves. Cut it out with the saw and smooth the sides with sandpaper. Line the piece up so it matches with the frame of the shelving unit. Attach the piece by hammering nails into the side border of the set of book shelves. Make sure each nail is embedded in the plywood pieces.
