- 1). Inspect the speaker wires if sound keeps cutting in and out while driving. There may be a short. Follow the wires from the amplifier to each speaker. Look for wires being snared under paneling. In particular look for bare wires touching the automobile's bare metal, although it's normal for the negative (black) wire to be grounded to the car's chassis.
- 2). Look for any loose connections throughout the audio system. The amplifier will be connected to the radio head unit in the dash as well as the speakers. Check this connection is tight.
- 3). Turn the music down. Avoid blasting music through the amplifier at levels that cause distortion. You can damage the amplifier. If the amplifier has cut out completely after blasting, let it cool down and reset itself.
- 4). Remove any carpet that may be covering the amplifier if it's positioned underneath seats. Make sure nothing blocks air ventilation. The XM-ZR604's power is converted into heat as well as sound, with heat being a by-product.
- 5). Check with your car manufacturer that after-market amplifiers can be installed if the Sony XM-ZR604 amplifier continues to cut out. It's easy to overload a car's alternator, particularly in older cars. You may have to investigate upgrades to the car's electrical system.
