- 1). Select a color palette you want to use for your home. Consider everything when making this decision, including the style of your décor, your furniture, your family's lifestyle and your personal taste. Decide if you want to go with warm or cool tones, and if you want bold colors or ones that are more neutral.
- 2). Select two or three primary colors you'll use in all of the rooms in your home. Add two or three more secondary, or accent, colors you want to use throughout your home. One of these colors should be neutral. Hang swatches of these paint colors on walls to decide what color you want on your walls.
- 3). Alternate primary and accent colors between the rooms in your home. If you decide on red, green and cream, each room would need to have one of the colors as the dominant color with the other two as secondary colors.
- 4). Paint different surfaces in different rooms to create harmony in your home. For example, paint a piece of furniture the same color as the walls in another room for a sense of continuity.
- 5). Paint trim, molding, ceilings and built-in cabinets to match colors you're using somewhere else in the house to create harmony. Muted green walls with cream trim in one room will flow next to a room with cream walls and muted green accents. Paint kitchen cabinets the same color you're using in an adjoining dining room or living area.
