- 1). Clean the table thoroughly with mild soap and water and a rag. You may need a stiff brush to remove stubborn built-up grime in small crevices such as the turnings in the legs. When you are finished, let it dry completely.
- 2). Sand the surface if it is glossy or if it has never been painted before. Use a medium grit sandpaper. Repair deep gouges or scratches with wood filler. Sand any rough spots smooth.
- 3). Wipe the table with a tack cloth to remove sanding residue and dust.
- 4). Apply primer over the surface of the entire table. Any primer made for walls will work. Let it dry.
- 5). Paint the table top and legs using a foam paint brush and long, even strokes. Let it dry. Apply two or three more coats, allowing the paint to thoroughly dry between coats. Apply as many coats as needed to get the look you desire. Dry thoroughly.
- 6). Apply a coat of clear topcoat of varnish or sealer to finish and protect the surface.
