Teaching Children About Home Safety

Having children is a huge responsibility, part of which is protecting them from dangers that are not even aware of. Such dangers include walking on the street alone, crossing streets and avoiding cars, learning to ride a bicycle or a skateboard and avoiding the associated dangers of getting around town, learning how to swim and subsequently being left unattended while playing in the pool or lake, and how to handle animals and behave around pets so as to avoid any unwanted conflicts that could lead to injury.

Unfortunately, statistics show that accidents leading to injury in the home are one of the leading causes of death for children. These types of unintentional injuries are lead by falling, be it down the stairs or simply in such a way that there is severe head trauma, poisoning from toxic liquids and products in the home, fires that lead to severe burns or smoke inhalation, suffocation, and drownings, which can occur not just in swimming or wading pools but in the bathtub or sink.

The main steps involved in educating your child about the need for safety in the home include identifying the main causes of home injuries, then helping your child develop a system for determining how to handle dangerous situations. This requires a certain level of preparation on the part of every family member - stress to your child that they are responsible for themselves when alone in the home, and that help may be out of their reach in some extreme cases. They must be informed of how to deal with unprecedented situations and what steps to take to try and avoid or solve them. Also, involving your kids in regular home security checks will bring certain hazards to their attention, and help them understand how to take the necessary measures to remedy the issue. In addition, orienting your child with the functions of the home security system will help them be a more integral part of the overall home safety network.

Give your home a once-over, with your child in tow, to help show them some of the potential dangers that could cause them problems in the future. Begin in the kitchen, by instructing them on proper use of the stove. Any household with very small children should get into the practice of using only the back burners, avoiding having any pot or pan handles from sticking out over the edge of the stove in the reach of small curious hands that could easily pull them down. Check that tablecloths don't hang over the table's edge excessively, allowing a child to pull it off and bring dishes and dangerous silverware crashing down onto their heads.

Tie up all hanging telephone, lamp, and appliance cords that dangle down from the wall with a twist tie to eliminate the danger of a child getting tangled up in the lines. Place outlet covers into wall sockets to safeguard against curious kids sticking fingers or other items into them.

Though you may indeed have a reliable home security system protecting your home and those in it against unwanted intruders, a home alarm or motion detectors will do very little to help your child in an emergency situation that arises within the home. Make sure that you and your children are all in agreement about the necessary measures for home safety.
