- 1). Disconnect the hose from the faucet during the winter. This prevents the hose attachment from freezing to the faucet and possibly cracking it.
- 2). Shut off the isolation valve in cold weather. This will cut off the water supply to the outdoor faucet and can therefore prevent internal freezing. The valve is normally located near the faucet or there may be a shutoff valve in your basement.
- 3). Turn on the faucet once the isolation valve is off. This removes any water remaining in the system.
- 4). Wrap the faucet in a faucet sock during snow or rain to help prevent freezing and to also prevent water corrosion.
- 5). Apply deicer to the faucet if it does get covered in snow and ice in order to thaw it out before the ice can damage it.
