- 1). Fill out and submit the Social Security application online at http://www.socialsecurity.gov/retireonline. On that site you will be able to submit your application for Social Security retirement benefits quickly and easily.
- 2). Call the Social Security office at (800) 772-1213. You can apply over the phone with the assistance of a Social Security representative. If you have difficulty hearing, socialsecurity.gov lists a TTY number you can call, (800) 325-0778.
- 3). Visit your nearest Social Security office and apply for retirement benefits in person. Socialsecurity.gov recommends that you make an appointment before going to the office.
- 4). Contact the nearest U.S. Social Security office or the U.S. Embassy to apply for Social Security retirement benefits if you don't live in the United States. You must be a legal resident of the United States to be eligible for Social Security benefits.
