- 1). Place a new probe cover over the end of the thermometer probe. Press the "Mem" button on the front of the ThermoScan once to turn it on. You will see a startup sequence on the screen before the "Ready" symbol is displayed.
- 2). Gently grasp the back of the ear of the person whose temperature you are taking. Pull the ear straight back for children less than a year old, and up and back for 1 year old and older. This will open up the ear canal and allow you to insert the thermometer more effectively.
- 3). Insert the thermometer probe into the ear canal while holding the ear back. Press it as far in as you can without causing discomfort. Press the "Activation" button and hold it down, making sure to keep the thermometer in place.
- 4). Release the button when you hear a beep. This signals that the temperature has been read. Remove the probe slowly from the ear. Read the temperature, which will be displayed in degrees Fahrenheit on the thermometer.
- 5). Press the eject button to remove the probe cover and throw it away.
